General
presentation
of Sophia Antipolis

The
creation of the scientific park is
due to the private grouping, with
a non lucrative goal, acting in liaison
with the Alpes Maritimes department.
The
park has developed at a continuous
manner for more than 30 years
Today
there are more than 1 260 corporate
names, and around 25 911 jobs. 1 326
jobs have been created and around
30 new companies implanted between
July 2001 to January 2003.
THE
SOPHIA ANTIPOLIS PARK
Formed
and commercialised in 1969 by a GIE
with a non lucrative goal, the programme
of the creation of a scientific park
was extended thanks to the maintained
will of active forces of the Alpes-Maritimes
department, of the State, of the PACA
region as well as the 5 initial communes
(Biot, Valbonne, Mougins, Vallauris
and Antibes) of whose terrain forms
the 2 300 hectors of today.
Four
other communes joined them to contribute
to the project of the extension of
the park: Villeneuve-Loubet, La Colle-sur-Loup,
Opio, Roquefort-les-Pins.
There
are near to 1276 corporate names,
and 26 635 direct jobs have been created
in a park where nature is respected.
HIGHER
EDUCATION – RESEARCH
The
University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis
and the CNRS with their multiple laboratories
and research and training institutes,
the IUT and the IUP, form a competitiveness
cluster in harmony with the knowledge
and the know-how of the site.
The
engineering schools and research organisms
(Ecole National Supérieure
des Mines, ESINSA, ESSI, INRIA, INRA,
Institut EUROCOM, Institut Théseus,
CERMICS, CERAM Sophia Antipolis etc.),
and the continuous training institutes
(CNAM, CPA Méditerranée,
GRETA Antipolis, Office international
de l’eau), consolidate the strategic
vision of Sophia Antipolis in the
subject matter of training.
HEALTH
SCIENCES, CHEMISTRY AND BIOTECHNOLOGIES
The
biotechnology - health - agricultural
chemistry competitiveness cluster,
groups together 60 companies of which
the corporate names are: Rhône-Poulenc
Agro, Dow Agrosciences, SmithKline
Beecham Clinical Laboratories, Rohm
and Haas, Dow Corning, NMT Neurosciences
Implants S.A, Allergan Europe. The
research is eminently represented
by the Institut de Pharmacologie Moléculaire
et Cellulaire (Molecular and Cellular
Pharmacology Institute), CNRS.
The
presence of these research centres
and these “locomotive”
companies provoked the arrival of
little and medium sized companies
that were attracted by the excellent
interface (CNEVA Sophia Antipolis,
the Cird-Galderma, Laboratoires MXM,
FDM Pharma, Cerdic, Codan France,
Laboratoire ElaiaPharm etc.). The
European Cardiology Corporation set
up its corporate headquarters in the
park. ECOR, the European House of
the Heart welcomes the best European
Cardiologists at the time of their
seminars and information sessions.
Numerous medical databases relate
new information and health technologies.
EARTH
SCIENCES
The
new energies, environment and earth
sciences count up 250 jobs, spread
out between public and private institutions
and SMEs. In the first two categories
we report the Blue Plan for the Mediterranean,
the ADEME, the CSTB, IMRA Europe etc.
Amongst
the little companies that are focused
towards research there are: Istar
for the applied stereo imaging, ACRI
for space and environment, SIGMA advice
consultants in energy, environment,
buildings and new technologies, Geoimage
for the treatment of satellite or
aerial images applied to digital cartography.
INFORMATION
TECHNOLOGY, ELECTRONICS, NETWORKS
AND COMMUNICATION
The
Information technology-electronics-telecommunications
cluster represents 25% of companies
of the site and nearly 50% of the
jobs.
We
note the presence of a large number
of renowned French and foreign companies
such as Air France, Amadeus Development
Company, Bouygues Telecom, ETSI, France
Telecom, Legrand, SEMA Group Telecom,
Siemens, Shiva, Atos Ingénierie
Intégration etc.
The
density that constitutes all these
companies is the core of the Club
Telecom Valley.
Aérospatiale, IBM and Texas
Instruments that are set up in the
close surroundings of the park are
also members of the Telecom Valley.
